Wood surfboard courses: build your own wood surfboard

ABOUT WOOD SURFBOARD COURSES

Burnett Wood Surfboards shares the stoke that comes with building and surfing your own wood surfboard through a variety of wood surfboard courses. You can sign up for scheduled wood surfboard courses (see the scheduled dates below) or if you can’t make these dates you can arrange to come and build a board on dates that suit you in a one-on-one environment.

Those participating walk away from the course with their own handcrafted and very beautiful wooden surfboard.

Our wood surfboard courses take builders through all the theoretical and practical aspects of building a wood surfboard. We look at the different types of timber, the environmental aspects and the design dynamics underpinning wood surfboards. This is combined with the practical process of crafting a surfboard from a pile of planks into a one-of-a-kind work of art that can be surfed.

What anyone who attends one of my wood surfboard courses gets is the experience of crafting your own unique wooden surfboard from a pile of planks. For most people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You’ll be able to surf it, show it off and there won’t be another board like it anywhere on the planet because each piece of wood that nature makes is uniquely different. It’s a process of engrossing yourself in the beauties of wood and at the same time making something with the beautiful curves of good surfboard design meant to harness the energy of a breaking wave. As someone who has been making these boards for nearly a decade and knows all the pitfalls and mistakes that can be made, I’m the ultimate resource to help you avoid common mistakes and make something that you’ll be proud of for life.

Anybody can do our wood surfboard courses. It’s not essential that you have DIY or woodworking experience as we’ve devised a programme that everyone can follow. Both ladies and gents are welcome. Participants build their own board (it won’t be done for you), under expert assistance, so you must be prepared to do a degree of work.

COURSE FEEDBACK

“The pleasure of working with wood and creating something with your hands that you will surf is world class. You have to do it to experience it.” – Lewin de Villiers, who built a 6’.4” egg shape.

“I must honestly say that this was one of the most incredible things I have done. Building a work of art ranks as one of my most amazing experiences. And I am probably going to do it again soon. Guaranteed satisfaction.” – Patrick Mahue, who built an 11′ longboard.

“It was an amazing experience to create something from nothing. I had a master craftsman to guide me, If you surf or even if you don’t, the challenge is a good one and I can highly recommend it. 2. Hi Anthony, it’s a full day over the period of a week.

  3. Man.

These boards look too beautiful. I would absolutely love to build one (or even buy a premade one), but I am going to have to build up my finances for a while first… I’ve got a good goal now.

    Lovely, lovely, work.

  4. Would it be possible to build a stand-on board during such a course, if so, what would the price difference be?

  5. Please have a look at the following page, which gives details about building a SUP on a course: http://burnettwoodsurfboards.co.za/products/paddleboards-sup/
